Event Report
A variety of ideas were presented to spread Sakata to the world.
The fourth Regional Forum of the 2022 YAMAGATA Youth Summit was held in Sakata City on November 9th. The venue this time around was MIRAINI, a facility for exchange that is located right across the street from Sakata Station. The event was held on the third floor, where the brilliant scene of a snow-capped Mt. Chokai could be seen, complemented by the fiery autumn leaves.
The theme of this session’s event was “SAKATA: A City with Seas, Mountains, and Islands: Bringing the City of Trade to the Interest of the World.” Sakata boasts a long history of being a city developed by maritime trade as it sits on the meeting place of the Mogami River and the Sea of Japan. In addition, a culture of supporting community service and the public good is permeated deeply into the mindset of those who live here as in historic times, the wealth brought by the Kitamae-bune trade was always reinvested into the town, often by the wealthy Honma family, for the greater good of the people.
During the event, panelists shared their opinions on the direction of the "KOEKI SAKATA" brand while introducing examples of activities that they are working on to promote Sakata in their own way.
In terms of background, there was a great deal of diversity among the panelists. A pair of college students who created a promotional video for Sakata (one of them is studying in Australia), an internationally married couple who make YouTube content about Japanese culture, a Kiwi Yamabushi, a ryokan owner, a man who is promoting Tobishima Island, and a woman who has an inbound travel company based in Yamagata. While everyone had a unique background, they all had something very valuable to contribute to the conversation.
"It's not enough to just send out information. It's important to narrow down the target," said Amandine of Bonsoir TV.
Yamabushi Tim Bunting added, "There are many Westerners who seek spiritual guidance, and our mission is to provide life-changing experiences."
Advisor Mr. Yano, who has traveled to 153 countries around the world, said, "The sea of Tobishima is the most beautiful in the world."
And Saori Yamashina of The Hidden Japan gave her thoughts on if there was an English website that introduced vegan, halal, and other restaurants that cater to minority diets, it would be very attractive and welcoming to travelers from overseas.
Overall, the panelists had many great ideas as to how to promote Sakata, and we are looking forward to a bright future together.
